HARRISBURG — Control of the Pennsylvania House and Senate is on the line this Tuesday.

Democrats want to maintain their majority in the lower chamber and flip the upper chamber for the first time in decades. If the party can do that — and hold onto the governor’s office, as it’s expected to do — it will achieve a trifecta and be able to set policy for the state with few limitations.

The state House is made up of 203 members who serve two-year terms. The entire body is on the ballot this year. Democrats currently hold a 103-100 majority.

All told, about two dozen House seats are expected to be competitive. They’re located across the commonwealth, mostly in suburbs and exurbs outside Allentown, Harrisburg, Philadelphia, and Pittsburgh.

The Pennsylvania Senate is made up of 50 members who serve four-year terms. Those terms are staggered, so half of the body — the even-numbered districts — will be on the ballot this year. Republicans’ current 27-23 majority is the Senate’s narrowest margin since the 2013-14 session, according to Ballotpedia.

Six districts are expected to be competitive. Four are held by Republicans who are facing Democrats, one is held by a Democrat facing a Republican, and the sixth is held by a GOP incumbent facing an independent challenger.

Democrats and Republicans are also targeting a handful of other Senate districts, though they are not considered to be as flippable.
